Build a Jumpseat!

I have always wanted to build one of these. Pretty simple infact but I had to guess a lot seeing as my boat is still bundled up for the winter and it's about 15degrees out right now, but I had some spare wood around and some free time. I originally saw one of these in a Natique in 98 and since have seen a few, but not many so I had absolutely no reference for this project. I decided to just winged it to see what would happen. I think it turned out pretty good.

For the basic measurements I started by literally sitting on a piece of wood and penciled out my seat. From there I tried to determine a height but how high I remember the dash coming up my thigh. I then began to trace out one side of the seat. Once I got an angle I thought would be good, I cut the first side. I checked the angles and height again once finished and made a few more adjustments. I then traced out the other side and cut. I finished but cutting out a few pieces for the cross members and back of the seat.

I assembled the crossmembers to one side entirely(predrilling/countersinking everything) for a flush finish. I then attached the oppisite side to complete the seats frame. I then added in the fering strips which will hold the seat back and bottom.

With everthing complete and assembled I coated all the wood pieces in two coats of polyurthene to help seal out moisture. Not a perfect solution but it should help it last a few years at least.

Once dry, I sprayed the frame with spray adhesive and covered it with a off-white canvas. I additionally stapled it to the inside of the frame to ensure it won't come loose to eaisly.

For the seat, I got pieces of 2' foam and cut them accordingly. I then stretched and stapled the vinyl to the seat back and bottom. I then attached the seat bottom and back to the frame with screws. To make it a little more tailored to my boat I choose solors that were similat to the interior of my boat.

In all it took about 3 hours start to finish.

Here are some pics and a measurement reference if your looking to do one yourself!

Enjoy,
