The Horseshoe - Avalon, NJ
Located parallel to
Avalon blvd which connects Avalon, NJ with the Garden State Parkway and the
rest of the world.
The Avalon Scene is both Salt, and
Tidal water, but that doesn't stop us from Wakeboarding sun up to sun down,
at least for a few months out of the year!
Location:
You can get to the channel by taking
Exit 13 off the Garden State Parkway North or South bound. Follow signs toward
Avalon. As you drive over the third bridge going east, you will see the channel
on your left side. About 1/4 after the third bridge, on the left hand side of
the road, you will see some trees and a fence opening. Go through the fence
opening, and you are there!!!
As you can see on the map, 26th Street
is in-line with the main channel, which measures 350 feet wide, by 1 Mile long.
The longer of the two channels that are not connected (closest to Avalon
Blvd) makeup what we in Avalon refer to as the "Horseshoe". There
is a beach that is accessible from the road which is right at the "A"
in Avalon Blvd. You can park about 7-10 boats there, and is a great place to
sit in the middle of the day to rest and chill and watch other Boarders around
the channel.
About
the channel:
Early morning and Late afternoon
are the BEST times to board here. During the day you get the wally's with their
tubes and water toys. They just chop up the water and make things difficult.
One thing to remember, if you ever board here, the channel gets crowded during
the day, if you are not comfy driving your boat at 20MPH only 20 ft from another
boat trying to get a boarder up, or having the same done to you, don't ski here.
Though it may look like you are going
to hit bottom near the sides of the channel, you won't. Even at low tide, the
channel is still plenty deep (8-12 ft) and even if you do its only very soft
silt, and mud, Just don't step in it with shoes on that is, unless you don't
need that shoe anymore. The suction power of this mud couldn't even be matched
by ShopVac!!!.
